Towards a Sustainable, Efficient Transportation System 
Symposium  //  May 17-19, 2021

The Department of the Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UWI, St. Augustine will be hosting its 2021 virtual Transportation Symposium entitled “Towards a sustainable efficient transportation system”. 

The symposium takes place over 3 days from 17th-19th May 2021. Each day’s session runs from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm AST. The purpose of this symposium, is to bring together different disciplines with an interest in transportation to develop an action plan for the transformation of the domestic transportation sector of Trinidad & Tobago, that can be extended to the broader Caribbean.

The symposium will be divided into 5 sub-themes:
  1. Revitalising Towns
  2. Road Transport Safety
  3. Private Sector Participation in Public Transport Services
  4. Green Transport Solutions
  5. Role of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Future Mobility 

The symposium activities are as follows:-

Day 1- Presentations by key speakers on the 5 sub-themes
  • Ms. Cheryl Bennet-Inniss- Chief Technical Officer, Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources, Barbados
  • Prof. Mark Raymond- Director of Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Mr. Lacey Williams- Managing Director, Caritrans Ltd, Trinidad
  • Ms. Selena Mohammed-Wilson- Transportation Consultant, SMW Consultancy, Jamaica
  • Mr. Curtis Mohammed- President, NGC CNG Company Ltd and Vice President Sustainable Energy Development, National Energy Corporation, Trinidad
  • Prof. Maria Attard- Head of Geography and Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, University of Malta, Malta

Day 2- Participants break out into interactive workshops on each sub-theme to develop the Action Agendas.

Day 3- Presentation of Action Agendas and plenary discussions.

This free event promises to generate rich discussion and to provide steps towards transforming the Transportation system in Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean.
